Time banks

Source: Banco de tiempo de Pinoso (Alicante)

Last Friday we talked about a different type of banks: time banks. They don´t work with money, but with the abilities and the will to help of their members. Every member offers an hour of his/her time and their help in the activities they are skilled. In exchange, they receive help in the way they prefer. There are a lot of possibilities: you can offer to clean the house of someone and receive a weaving lesson or you can offer an hour of babysitting and get a guitar lesson in exchange ... It´s similar to barter, but people don´t exchange material things. They exchange their time.

Here you have some links, where you will find more information about time banks:

Hi Paqui!
As I told you last friday, I really like this manner of working, because we don't need money, and we can exchange activities, offering the others the things that we know.
I think everyone should do it, and on this way, there wouldn't be problems with the money.
See you!

Hello Laura!

I agree with you. We are so used to need money for everything that we have forgotten that there are alternatives. Money is a human invention, but we don´t realize how this human invention has ended up controlling our entire lives. There are alternative ways of getting what we need and offering what we have or know. Everyone can find something to exchange without using money. Time banking is also a way of considering different types of activities (intellectual or manual) as equally valuable. An interesting idea to change the world with simple initiatives. Thanks again for your comments. See you tomorrow!

If the money don't exists the poor people will be in the same conditions that rich people and to the rich people don't like that idea. I think that for that reason we are using money.
Bye!

Interesting debate here! We are using money because it´s a tradition and we are used to do it. But there are other options and that doesn´t mean going back to Prehistory. We decide if we can be part of a society, where everything is valued depending on money (in the possession of money), or if we prefer to set up a different scale to value things.

If money didn´t exist, there would be also social differences, because we are not equal in desires and ambitions. But maybe economic differences wouldn´t be so big between the richest and the poorest.

I agre with Alejandro in the idea of the necessity of a change in minds. This will only come if people are open-minded, critic and able to think in other options. History shows that change is possible and the people are the main actors to change things.

I´m looking forward to go on with this unit and these debates in the classroom. Have a good night!

Hello Paqui

I'm agree with you, money is not necesary with this type of new things like time bancks, you want something you go and in exchange of one thing you can do, you have the thing you wanted. And without money.

I like this a lot. I would like to be in a time banck.

Bye Bye

See you tomorrow.

Enrique, pay attention to spelling: bank has to be written without "c".

We could create a time bank in the high school as a class project. It would be a good idea ;)
